CORPUS CHRISTI - With Halloween on Monday, who knew being scared could be so much fun? But for paranormal researchers, encountering spirits is very serious business on Halloween or any day of the year for that matter.

Just like on that popular cable TV show "Ghost Hunters," some here in Corpus Christi are looking for paranormal presence. The Ward-McCampbell House in Heritage Park was built in 1908 originally on Water Street, just feet from Corpus Christi Bay. Some ghost hunters from the groups Corpus Christi Paranormal and Corpus Christi Spook Central believe the house is haunted.

Margaret Prescott, with Corpus Christi Spook Central, noted why they were interested in conducting a mission at the home

"The history that's behind the house. Going through the storm and surviving the storm," she said.

The 1919 hurricane devastated Corpus Christi. The storm tides rose and swallowed much of the home. Beckie Smith, with Corpus Christi Paranormal, said, "Mrs. McCampbell was up on the second floor with her three sons during the hurricane and watched houses and carcasses and stuff float by, and she passed away shortly after that from pneumonia." Fast forward 86 years.

What will this team of moonlighting ghost-hunters find? Is the home haunted? Are there spirits on the other side of these windows? Will they hear spooky sounds? To find out, this historic home is going high-tech.

Ray Ewald, a member of Corpus Christi Spook Central, said while using a digital thermometer inside the house, "If it does drop anywhere in this room, we know that there's presence. Some form of paranormal."

The temperature of rooms is closely monitored, video surveillance is set up, and audio tapes hope to catch messages from the dead. With a flash or two here, another flash there, just maybe a ghost will be caught on tape.

Ewald said to the room, "We know you're here. So please show us a sign."

Paranormal investigators say they captured an orb, or spirit energy, on camera in one room at the Ward-McCampbell House. And during the hair-raising mission, one door was spotted creeping open by itself.

Ron Romanowski, a remember of the Corpus Christi Paranormal Group, said, "It gave me the goosebumps. That was the first time I got the goosebumps in a long time." And then, tape recorders pick up EVP's, or Electronic Voice Phenomenon.

During this mission, they recorded several mysterious messages, including one where a voice was heard saying "water full" or "wonderful" and another that seemed to be saying "I love you... help" according to members.

Are there signs of life after death here? These ghost hunters ruled, the Ward-McCampbell house is indeed haunted. You'll have to be the judge about that. Whether you buy into the paranormal or not, it is interesting to read about their ghost-hunting missions all over South Texas.

Who knows...it could make for a scary Halloween outing Monday night.
